The Need for Housing
Marin County is one of the least affordable counties in California. Both renters and homeowners face challenges.
Each day, workers who provide essential services in Marin – our teachers, nurses, office workers, police officers, daycare providers, retail salespeople and restaurant workers – drive long distances from surrounding counties just to get to work. When local employees can’t live close to where they live, everyone loses.
- Traffic increases.
- Families lose time together.
- Employers have a harder time finding quality employees and keeping them.
- Local businesses lose revenue when workers spend dollars earned in Marin outside the county.
- Essential service jobs go unfilled.
Although the median home price has fallen, many workers are still priced out of the homeownership market. As of January, 2010, the median single-family home in Marin was still $640,000 and the median priced condo was $360,000.
